Get to know your gadget’s battery

Just a bout few years ago when we were introduced with mobile phones, I still remember I have to charge my battery every single day or even twice a day. It goes flat after just talking on the phone for a while.
But now, I can leave my Sonyericsson cell phone without charge for a few days and still use it everyday.
Technology in battery has progressed rapidly, and now you can find many type of batteries for different gadgets. By knowing your batteries and how to treat them, will make your battery last longer and so the gadget itself.

1. Alkaline is commonly used battery, cheap not suitable for power hungry gadget like Mp3 player, it will flat out in one use, but for low power electronic like clock and remote control, it will last few years. This battery can not be recharged.

2. Silver oxide batteries or silver-ZINC provide enough power and long lasting. This type of batteries are used in watches and toys. The disadvantage, silver component inside is expensive batteries if the battery is big in size. In addition, at the end of the battery cycle, are often leak and discharge its harmful mercury.

3. Lead-acid batteries, are like what you use on your car, boat, golf car. Be careful when handling this battery, the acid is very corrosive and can burn skin.

4. Rechargeable Alkaline, are like Alkaline battery but it’s rechargeable. It will pump the electrons back i every recharge. Unlike Nickel Metal Hydrate battery, Alkaline rechargeable will not flat out when not used, but the capacity will decrease in every recharge.

5. Nickel Cadmium, alias NiCad, was the first refill batteries and cheap and most widely used in toys and various gadgets. Charging is relatively quickly, but have the effect of memory. If it recharged before flatted out, it will form crystals which decrease the power for the next usage. Even though It’s not used, the battery will flat out in 90 days.

6. Nickel metal hydride, alias NiMH, replaced NiCad which can hold power up to 40% more for the same size as NiCad battery and still have memory effect but not as bad as Nicad, also will flat out slowly if not used.

7. Lithium ion alias Li-ion is now the standard batteries these days. It is more efficient and have no memory effect, so you can charge anytime. The disadvantages, they are still quite expensive, and the recharge cycle only half compare NIMH (1000 vs 500 times).

8. Lithium ion poly or Lithium Polymer (Li-Po), come from lithium ion but they used polymer gel based electron instead. That is why is called Lithium Poly. It’s lighter and now commonly used for laptop battery.

9. Lithium iron phosphate (Li-Fe) is the latest development of lithium ion, by replacing the mixture of cobalt oxide in the li-ion.It can release huge amount of power and can be charged very quick. However, until now Lithium iron phosphate is still expensive and complicated to produce. Gadgets who use this type of battery are hybrid cars.
