How to transfer car registration in Queensland
If you just came and intend to live in Queensland, you need to convert your registration and your driving license to Queensland one. Here is how to do it: (I just did mine from NSW Rego and license).
You need to go to Queensland Transport, for the list of their locations, click here.
Driving License:
1. Just bring your current driving license and proof of address. (it can be electricity bill, bank statement, etc as long as your address written on it).
2. Bring your medicare card (if you are not Australian or Permanent Residence, please bring your passport).
3. Pay for your new license fee, they have option for 1,2,3,4,5 years. I paid $68 for 5 years one.
4. After you paid, they will take your picture and done. You’ll get your QLD Lisence on the spot, all proceess les than 10 minutes.
Car Registration:
1. First, you need to get Road Worthy Cerificate (RWC) in order to transfer your car registration to QLD. Just book for road worthy inspection from your preffered mechanic, Kmart Tyre and Auto service or Repco, or any authorized mechanic. You can check Automotive Repairer Hotline, to find mechanic near you. The RWC costs $60.
2. Bring the RWC, Your car’s number plates, and Current Registration Paper to Queeensland Transport. You have to surrender the number plate to them and they will give you the new QLD ones.
3. You need to have a Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTP) when you are registering your car. All you need to do is to tell them which insurer you choose (RACQ, AAMI, NRMA, Suncorp, Etc), you don’t need to deal with the insurer yourself, just pay through Queensland Transport when you pay for your car registration.
4. You have an option to pay 6 months or 12 months registration. The price is varied depending the plan you choose and what type of car you own. In my case, I paid $584 for 12 months rego on 2002 Toyota Corolla. That’s it.
The process is about similar in all other states throughout Australia except for the CTP. In other states, (as far I know) you have to do it by yourself before you go to the Transport Office.
