Surakarta, the heart of Java
Surakarta, often known as Solo City is one of city of Central Java Province, Indonesia. Solo is a historic city with palaces, temples and the scenic landscape, located 60 kms north-east of Yogyakarta and 100 kms south of Semarang
You can fly to Surakarta directly from any major cities in Indonesia, such as Surabaya and Jakarta. The only international flights serving Surakarta are from Singapore and Malaysia. Trains and Buses are also available from major cities in Indonesia.
Climate
Solo’s climate is tropical, high both in temperature and humidity, around 27 degree Celsius all the year. The humidity is actually lower compared to other cities, because Solo doesn’t have ocean and surrounded by volcanoes. Solo has plenty to offer for tourists, from food, souvenirs, puppet dance, and many other cultural things as well as recreation areas surrounding Solo.
Food
This is a thing you should not miss when you are visiting Solo, be prepare to put on extra pounds when you get home. After the sun sets hundreds of food stalls are selling on the streets all over Solo, especially in Solo Baru. Let’s start some of the popular ones, there are many fantastic food originally from Solo.
• Srabi, it’s a coconut pancake made from rice flour, sweet and tasty located in Notosuman, hence many people call it Srabi Notosuman. Notosuman is not only famous with its srabi but also with Onde-Onde (sesame cokkies) and Bakso Notosuman (Indonesian Meat Ball). They open all day.
•Nasi Liwet, sort of like Coconut Rice is the delicious specialty of Solo city served with shredded chicken, eggs and chayote. Locations: Loji Wetan, Keprabon, Sraten and by mobile street food vendors in the morning.
• Cabuk Rambak, is slices of rice cake served with thick sambal (made of grated coconut, kemiri, sesame, lime leaves, & chili) and rice chips. You can buy it from mobile street food vendors in the morning.
• Babi Pincuk is a delicious pork slices soup. We can choose the content: pork meat, intestine, ear, lungs, heart, also pig blood. The seller will chop it into thin slices, then add the tasty sauce and spicy sambal. Locations: Purbayan and in front of Pasar Gede.
• Tegkleng, a Solo style thin goat curry soup, very exotic taste you will never find else where. It does not have a lot of meat, but only the left over on the bones and organs. You can buy tengkleng in Jongke, Solo Baru and Pasar Klewer, the nicest one is in Pasar Klewer.
• Timlo Sastro, another Solo style soup, served with egg omelet and chicken hearts and giblets. location is near Pasar Gede.
There are actually still a lot more traditional food, but I can’t explain them. You can try them in Solo Baru, just go there at night, you will find tens of food stalls along the road. So many to choose.
Where to go in Solo
• The Kasuanan Palace, is an enormous landmark in the city. The Palace was the dwelling of the Java king who ruled over Central Java, century ago. The palace is huge and was built in the year 1745. They also have museum to visit that displays many interesting royal items such as weapons, clothes, tools and even horse carts.
• Puro Mangkunegaran Palace, another palace smaller than Kasunanan Palace. The building was made of teakwood and there are a number of European chandeliers. The floor was laid with Italian marbles, where they put two sets of Gamelan (traditional Javanese percussion), and regularly show the classical dance and music rehersals. Both palaces are two must see tourist destination in Solo.
• Pasar Gede is one of the main traditional markets in Surakarta. The market was designed by famous Dutch architect Ir. Thomas Karsten during Dutch colonialization in Indonesia, finished in 1930 and was called Pasar Gede Hardjanagara.It is called Pasar Gede (means Big Market) because it consists of large shelters. In its early time, it was the biggest and the greatest market in Surakarta.
• Radya Pustaka Museum, situated at JL. Slamet Riyadi, is the oldest museum of the city. The actual name of the museum is Paheman Radya Pustaka and it was established on the 28th October 1890. The museum features a wide range of exhibits all of which will give you a fair understanding of the tradition and custom of Solo as well as Indonesia.
Radya Pustaka Museum was built with the purpose of saving books and works of the poets, writers and intellectuals from the past. In fact the museum is renowned and now features an extensive collection of antiquities, gamelan, keris, puppets, scroll of wayang beber, some Javanese and Dutch books. The museum open all days except Monday from 8 am to 1 pm, but on Friday the museum only open from 8 am to 11 am.
Surakarta’s outers
• Tawangmangu, located on the slope of mystical Mount Lawu, is a recreational resort. This place offers nice waterfall, beautiful moutain views, swimming pools, bungalows and restaurants. Located about 1400 m above sea level, Tawangmangu promises a cool fresh atmosphere. Here we can enjoy horse riding and various kind of flowers, vegetables, and fruits.
You can walking through the beatiful pinus forest and many monkey live there. They also have a swimming pool, shelter, eating booths, and fruit kiosks. Grojogan Sewu has received awards as the best tourism destination in Central Java
